GRAND      ELEGANT    BEAUTIFUL

Even if the breed have been more common in Sweden it draws attention wherever it goes. The leonberger is grand, elegant, beautiful and big, despite the big size it’s a lithe dog.

The history of the breed started in Germany in the city Leonberg,  in the end of 1830 the german Heinrich Essig put the ground for the leonberger breed by crossing a black and white newfoundland  female (landseer) with a longhaired st. Bernhard. It’s believed that this mating was done to get a breed that looked like the lion on the city arms shield. But it took until 1846 before the first litter who got the name leonberger was born in the city of Leonberg. Gradually the leonberger became fashion, famous people like Wagner and Bismarck had leonbergers.

1895 the first standard was written, before that they entered the dogs to shows as st. Bernhard, mountaindog and leonberger.  1901 the “ Nationaler Leonberger Klub” was founded and they started to write pedigree. The first dog in the pedigree was

Barry Germaniae born 23/6 1889.

1963 the first leonberger was registered in the Swedish kennelclub. Many years later the 27th of September 1979 the first Swedish litter was born.

Much have happened in the breed since the beginning, both good and bad. Mine and all others ambition are to breed leonbergers with good mental and fysical health and a long life with their owners. I also want to keep the size, bone, mask and a good anatomy.
